Gilgit‑Baltistan Judicial Academy marks 4 years of training initiatives

Gilgit‑Baltistan Judicial Academy

The Gilgit-Baltistan Judicial Academy has completed four years since its establishment, marking a significant milestone in its mission to strengthen the legal and judicial system in the region through professional training and capacity building. Since its inauguration in 2021, the academy has trained hundreds of judges, lawyers, prosecutors, court staff, and law enforcement officers across Gilgit-Baltistan.

The anniversary was observed with a small ceremony at the academy’s main campus in Jutial, Gilgit, attended by members of the judiciary, legal experts, and senior officials. The Chief Judge of the Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Court praised the academy’s efforts in introducing modern legal education tools, interactive workshops, and human rights-based training modules. He noted that the institution has played a key role in improving the quality of court proceedings and promoting justice delivery in both urban and remote areas.

Over the past four years, the academy has organized training sessions on case management, gender-sensitive legal procedures, cybercrime laws, anti-terrorism frameworks, and alternative dispute resolution. In collaboration with national and international partners, it has brought expert trainers to share knowledge and conduct practical exercises with participants.

The Judicial Academy has also expanded its reach by holding mobile training sessions in Skardu, Ghizer, Hunza, and other districts, allowing court staff from far-flung areas to benefit from learning opportunities without needing to travel to Gilgit. Several women legal professionals have participated in these sessions, which has been seen as a positive step toward inclusion and gender balance in the judiciary.

Officials at the academy say they are now working on digitizing training materials and introducing e-learning platforms to support ongoing education for legal professionals. They also plan to introduce specialized courses for juvenile justice, environmental law, and customary law relevant to local communities in Gilgit-Baltistan.

With growing public expectations from the justice system, the Gilgit-Baltistan Judicial Academy has become an important pillar for building a more responsive, efficient, and professional legal framework in the region. As it enters its fifth year, stakeholders are hopeful that the academy will continue to grow and play a central role in shaping the future of justice in Gilgit-Baltistan.
