A regional football tournament is currently underway in Gilgit-Baltistan under the supervision of the Pakistan Army, with all matches being played in accordance with FIFA rules. The event has been organized by the Force Command Northern Areas (FCNA) and brings together football teams from all districts of the region for a structured and professional-level competition.
This is the first time a football tournament in Gilgit-Baltistan is being managed using official FIFA standards, including certified referees, timekeeping, and match protocols. The step has been widely welcomed by local sports officials, coaches, and players, who say it brings new discipline, fairness, and professionalism to the regional football scene.
Young players aged under 23 from districts such as Hunza, Skardu, Diamer, Astore, Ghizer, Ghanche, and Gilgit have been selected through earlier trials to represent their areas. The tournament, held at Gilgit City Football Ground, began with an opening ceremony attended by senior military officers, local leaders, and enthusiastic supporters. A large number of students and families also turned up to witness the matches, turning the event into a celebration of community and sports.
Military officials overseeing the tournament said that the aim is to promote healthy competition, strengthen youth engagement, and create pathways for talented players to move toward national-level representation. They also mentioned that maintaining international standards in regional competitions is important to raise the confidence and performance of local athletes.
So far, the matches have been competitive, with teams showing improved coordination and tactical play thanks to the use of formal match structures. Organizers have also ensured that the tournament includes safety measures, medical support, and fair play policies to create a positive environment for all participants.
Coaches and former players have expressed hope that such tournaments will continue in the future and help develop a strong sports culture in Gilgit-Baltistan. They also praised the role of the Pakistan Army in organizing the event and providing young people with a platform to grow and represent their region with pride.
The final match is expected to take place in early February, and preparations are already being made for increased attendance and live coverage. This tournament marks a new chapter for football in Gilgit-Baltistan, where the passion for the sport continues to grow with every passing year.
