FlyDubai waits approval to launch international flights via Skardu Airport

FlyDubai UAE to Gilgit-Baltistan flights

FlyDubai, the government-owned low-cost airline of the United Arab Emirates, is awaiting final approval to begin international flight operations to Skardu International Airport, a major step that could transform air connectivity and tourism in Gilgit-Baltistan. The airline has already completed technical evaluations of the airport and is ready to begin operations as soon as it receives clearance from Pakistani aviation authorities.

According to officials familiar with the matter, FlyDubai has shown serious interest in starting direct flights between Dubai and Skardu, especially after the airport received its international status in late 2021. However, despite the airport being operational for international flights on paper, regulatory hurdles and pending approvals from the Civil Aviation Authority and other departments have delayed the process.

A delegation from FlyDubai visited Skardu earlier this year to assess the airport’s runway, terminal facilities, navigation systems, and passenger handling capabilities. The airline is confident that with a few upgrades in ground services and immigration processing, regular international flights can begin without major issues. Local authorities have also expressed their readiness to facilitate the airline and improve coordination between federal and provincial bodies.

The arrival of an international carrier like FlyDubai would be a breakthrough for Gilgit-Baltistan’s growing tourism industry. It would offer easier access for foreign tourists, especially from the Gulf region, Europe, and beyond, who currently have to take connecting domestic flights from Islamabad. It would also be a major convenience for thousands of Gilgit-Baltistan natives living in the UAE, who currently face long and expensive journeys to reach their hometowns.

Tour operators, hoteliers, and local businesses are eagerly watching the situation, hoping for a quick resolution. They believe the introduction of direct international flights will lead to a sharp rise in tourist arrivals, increased hotel occupancy, and more job opportunities in the region. However, they also stress the need for better airport management, trained staff, and sustainable planning to avoid the pressure that comes with a sudden surge in air traffic.

The government of Gilgit-Baltistan has extended full support to the initiative and is in contact with the Ministry of Aviation and other federal bodies to expedite the approval process. If approved, FlyDubai would become the first foreign airline to operate directly to any airport in Gilgit-Baltistan.

Skardu International Airport is one of the highest-altitude airports in the world with a newly upgraded runway and basic international terminal facilities. The successful launch of international operations could open the doors for other airlines in the future and place Gilgit-Baltistan firmly on the map of global mountain tourism.
