Work on the long-awaited upgrades to Skardu International Airport is progressing after the federal government approved a Rs 180 million development project aimed at improving passenger handling, operational safety, and international flight readiness. The project includes expansion of terminal facilities, modernization of navigation systems, and upgrades to airside infrastructure, all designed to bring the airport closer to international aviation standards.
Officials from the Civil Aviation Authority confirmed that the funds are being utilized to enhance runway lighting, improve security systems, and build additional immigration and customs counters. These developments are expected to ease congestion during peak tourist seasons and prepare the airport to accommodate direct international flights in the near future.
The airport, located at over 7,300 feet above sea level, has already received international status and has handled occasional international operations, including special chartered flights. However, regular international services have yet to begin due to gaps in infrastructure and logistical support. The Rs 180 million project is seen as a step toward closing those gaps.
Skardu Airport is one of the busiest in northern Pakistan during the summer months, serving thousands of domestic travelers headed for the scenic valleys of Skardu, Shigar, and Khaplu. With the surge in tourism, especially from overseas Pakistanis and international visitors, the demand for reliable and efficient air travel has increased sharply.
Local tourism stakeholders have welcomed the move, saying that improved facilities will not only boost tourist satisfaction but also support the local economy by encouraging longer stays and higher spending. They have also urged authorities to ensure that the upgrades are completed on time and that the airport is staffed with trained professionals to handle international arrivals.
As development continues, there is growing hope that Skardu will soon be fully capable of handling direct international flights, including potential operations from airlines like FlyDubai. For Gilgit-Baltistan, this project is more than just an airport upgrade—it represents a connection to the world, new economic possibilities, and greater recognition of the region’s importance on the national and global stage.
