Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has resumed its direct international flight service between Dubai and Skardu, marking a significant step forward for tourism in Gilgit-Baltistan. The inaugural flight departed from Dubai International Airport on August 4 and landed at Skardu International Airport, reconnecting the UAE with one of Pakistan’s most scenic destinations after a months-long hiatus.

This development comes as part of PIA’s broader efforts to facilitate easier access for international tourists and overseas Pakistanis to Gilgit-Baltistan region. The direct route cuts down travel time and eliminates the need for connecting domestic flights, which had previously deterred many travelers from visiting Skardu.

On arrival, the flight was welcomed with a traditional water salute, and officials from the Gilgit-Baltistan government, airport authorities, and local tourism stakeholders were present to greet the passengers. The passengers included tourists, expatriates, and representatives from the travel industry.

PIA officials expressed optimism about the route’s success, citing increasing demand from the UAE and Gulf regions during the peak summer season. The service is expected to operate once a week initially, with plans to increase frequency depending on demand and operational feasibility.

Skardu has rapidly emerged as a top travel destination in Pakistan, drawing visitors to its pristine lakes, high-altitude deserts, and access to the world’s highest peaks. With improved connectivity, local businesses and tour operators are hopeful for a surge in international tourism, especially from the Middle East.

Travel industry experts believe this renewed air link will not only promote tourism but also boost the regional economy by creating new opportunities in hospitality, transport, and trade.

PIA’s move is also being seen as a response to growing international interest in Gilgit-Baltistan, which was recently featured in CNN Travel’s list of best destinations for 2025.

Authorities have urged all stakeholders to ensure responsible tourism and maintain the ecological integrity of the region while welcoming increased visitor traffic.
