PTI-backed Khalid Khurshid aims majority in upcoming Gilgit-Baltistan Elections

Khalid Khurshid, the former Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan and a senior leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), is preparing to contest the upcoming legislative assembly elections with the goal of securing a fresh majority. As the five-year term of the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly nears its end, political activities in the region have started to gain momentum. Khalid Khurshid is expected to lead the PTI campaign and present his government’s performance as the basis for seeking a new mandate.

Since taking office in 2020, Khalid Khurshid has focused on development projects in health, education, tourism, and road infrastructure. His government has also worked on improving electricity supply, launching youth development programs, and expanding access to clean drinking water in various districts. These achievements are likely to be highlighted in the election campaign to gain support from voters across the region.

Khurshid has maintained a strong following in his home constituency of Ghizer, but this time he is aiming to expand PTI’s influence to more districts, including Diamer, Skardu, and Astore. Local PTI chapters are being reorganized, and several former independents who joined PTI after the last elections are expected to contest again under the party’s banner. However, the party also faces internal challenges, including disagreements over ticket distribution and coordination with the central PTI leadership.

Opposition parties, especially Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), are preparing strong campaigns to challenge PTI. PPP is highlighting its historical ties to Gilgit-Baltistan and projects launched during its earlier governments. PML-N is focusing on infrastructure development and federal support for GB under its past leadership. Both parties are expected to field experienced candidates in key constituencies.

Khalid Khurshid and his team are confident that their record in government and continued popularity among young voters will give them an edge. They are also focusing on social media, local gatherings, and outreach to community elders to gain broader support.

The Election Commission of Gilgit-Baltistan is expected to announce the election schedule soon. With less than six months remaining, candidates and parties are now entering the crucial phase of public contact, alliances, and campaign planning.

The coming election will be a test not only for Khalid Khurshid and PTI but also for the future of political stability and development in Gilgit-Baltistan. Voters will decide whether to continue with the current leadership or bring change through the ballot box.
