Shandur Polo Festival, Chitral vs Gilgit, 2025

The world’s highest polo ground once again echoed with cheers and hoofbeats as the annual Shandur Polo Festival was held from July 7 to 9 at the scenic Shandur Pass. Thousands of spectators from across Pakistan and abroad gathered at the breathtaking plateau between Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral to witness traditional freestyle polo and cultural celebrations.

The highlight of the festival was the historic rivalry between the teams of Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral. As in previous years, both teams played with passion and skill, reflecting centuries of tradition. The final match was fast-paced and fiercely contested, with Chitral edging out Gilgit-Baltistan in a thrilling finish. Despite the loss, the GB team won hearts for their powerful performance and sportsmanship.

Apart from polo, the festival featured folk music, regional dance performances, handicraft stalls, and traditional food that reflected the diverse culture of both regions. Tourists were especially excited to experience the vibrant celebrations set against the majestic background of snow-covered mountains and green meadows.

The event was organized with support from the governments of Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with tight coordination from local administration and security forces to ensure safety and crowd management. Officials reported a significant increase in visitors this year, thanks to improved road access and social media coverage that helped promote the event globally.

Shandur Polo Festival is not just a sports competition but a symbol of unity, cultural pride, and peaceful celebration in Pakistan’s mountainous north. The return of the festival in full spirit after several years of disruptions due to weather and political uncertainties brought much joy to local communities and businesses who benefit from the tourism it brings.

As the sun set over Shandur Lake on the closing day, spectators left with memories of high-altitude adventure, thrilling polo, and the unmatched hospitality of the mountain people. The success of this year’s festival has raised hopes for even larger participation and improved infrastructure for the coming years.
